Important Information to Consider When Switching to Synthetic Oil

If you are thinking of changing to synthetic oil rather than conventional petroleum-based motor oil for use in your vehicle, you should know that there is generally no time that is considered better than another to switch. For the most part, synthetic oils offer longer-lasting protection for your car's engine than do conventional motor oils. However, there are a few times when switching to a synthetic oil may help your car’s engine last longer and perform better.

Times to Consider Switching to Synthetic Oil

If you live in a particularly cold area, and you use conventional motor oil, there may be times when the cold weather causes the motor oil to thicken to the point that the vehicle is not able to properly pressurize the oil in the engine right away. Because most synthetic oils have a better viscosity range than conventional motor oil, using a synthetic motor oil in your vehicle will help in situations where the oil pressure takes time to come to appropriate levels because of the thickness of conventional motor oils.

Switching to a quality synthetic oil is especially useful for cars that have smaller and harder working engines. Because of the higher rpm levels required in small cars to generate enough power for acceptable performance and speed, the parts of the car's engine are more susceptible to friction and can always benefit from the better lubrication of synthetic motor oils. Also, synthetic motor oils can help protect older engines that may already have some wear and tear on them.
