When repairing your vehicle’s transmission, repair parts availability it something to consider. There are many parts inside a transmission and having to shop around during the repair for something missing can cause a problem. There are companies that can supply an overhaul kit for most makes and models of vehicles. These kits contain all the gaskets, seals, rings, lined and steel plates. There are also kits that will include the filter, transmission bands and bushings.

Unless you’re a trained mechanic, it is advisable to have someone qualified to do this service. A new or rebuilt transmission or a complete service is expensive and even though you can save money doing it yourself, a transmission is a complicated unit.

There are repair manuals available and some of the companies that sell the rebuild kits will include instructions with drawings showing the location of the parts and the order of disassembly and reassembly.

Besides the rebuild kit, you will need a full set of wrenches including a torque wrench. Too much torque or pressure when tightening a bolt can cause the threads on the bolt or in the transmission plates to strip. At that point you need to purchase additional parts. You will also need a good shop jack and stands to raise the car for access. The shop jack will also be needed to lower the transmission and move to your workbench. Covering the work area with absorbent coverings to help in cleanup from all the fluid escaping once the transmission housing is opened.
