Ford Escape Trims
The Ford Escape has been one of the best selling small SUVs since its introduction during the 2001 model year. Riding on a revised Mazda 626-inspired chassis developed for the Mazda Tribute, rack and pinion steering and an independent rear suspension give the four-door Escape handling characteristics more like a large sedan.
The Ford Escape is available in XLS, XLT and Limited trim levels in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive configuration. Excluding the Limited trim all 2009 models come standard with a revised 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 171hp, a significant improvement over previous years. The four-cylinder is backed up with a 6-speed automatic on the XLS and XLT models with a 5-speed manual optional on the XLS. A 3.0-liter V6 delivers 240 horsepower through a six-speed automatic transmission, standard on the Limited trim and optional on the XLT.
The varying trim models increase the number of standard features and the Escape was the first SUV available as a gasoline/electric hybrid model. Boasting an EPA-certified 75% increase in overall mileage the hybrid Escape is the most fuel efficient SUV in production. Mercury also produces a higher-end version of the Escape: the Mariner. The Mariner has additional standard features and modified styling.
While the new engines provide the Escape with some pep, previous year models had poorer acceleration; the base 2001 four-cylinder provided only 127 horsepower, with an increase to 150hp in 2005. The optional V-6 output remained at 200 hp until 2009. Additionally, the Escape platform is growing older and newer entries into the compact SUV market have outpaced the Escape in both ride and comfort despite recent updates. However, the low price of the Escape continues to make it a viable option.
A capable and versatile vehicle, the Escape well serves the urban driver with its light towing and off-road capabilities. While the platform is older than many current compact SUVs, an updated interior and an attractive price continue to make the Escape a competitive vehicle.
