For each major redesign, a vehicle is said to begin a new "generation."

The F-150 trims consist of the rugged and reliable XL, the sporty STX, the versatile and well-equipped XLT, the durable FX4 and the luxurious Lariat. Each trim boasts its own unique styling, appearance and capabilities. All 2010 F-150's come equipped with a V8 engine and an automatic transmission. A 2-valve 4.6-liter V8 is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, and a 3-valve 4.6-liter or 5.4-liter V8 are mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission. The F-150's versatility offers 4x2 or 4x4 drive systems, three cab styles, three pickup box lengths and a host of option groups and available features. The F-150 can be ordered in millions of combinations to suit specific needs and individual tastes. The King Ranch, the Harley-Davidson and the Platinum Edition packages add to the refinement and distinctiveness of this pickup truck.

2004 - 2010 Ford F-150
Major changes included: The F-150 grows - it is 6 inches longer - and becomes more sophisticated. It is available in 5 trims: XL, STX, XLT, FX4 and Lariat. For 2006, a Harley-Davidson package is available, which includes the availability of all-wheel drive.

1997 - 2003 Ford F-150
Major changes included: The F-150 gets a curvaceous makeover and three new engine choices in 1997. The supercharged Lightning is reintroduced in 1999, the Harley-Davidson edition debuts in 2000, and the SuperCrew body style arrives for the 2001 model year.

1992 - 1996 Ford F-150
Major changes included: America's best-selling vehicle gets a smoother, more aerodynamic look in 1992; this year also sees the reintroduction of the Flareside bed design. The sporty Lightning model joins the lineup in '93 (only to be dropped in '96), and the luxurious Eddie Bauer edition debuts in 1995.
