Hybrid Repair and Maintenance

If you are thinking of purchasing a hybrid vehicle, hybrid repair and maintenance issues and the costs associated with them may be something you want to consider. Generally speaking, today's new hybrid vehicles involve about the same amount of repair and maintenance costs as standard internal combustion engine vehicles. However, there are a few exceptions.

Batteries in most hybrid vehicles are designed to last for more than 100,000 miles. However, many people commute more than 100 miles back and forth to work every day, and can put 100,000 miles on a vehicle in less than five years. At present, battery repair or replacement cost for hybrid vehicles can range from $3,000-$5,000 depending on the model of the vehicle and the problem with the battery. While future generations of hybrid vehicle batteries promise more in terms of a longer useful life and lower prices, current battery technology makes replacing or repairing a battery very expensive.

Because most hybrid vehicles weigh a lot more than standard gas powered engine vehicles, this can create the need to change tires much more frequently than on standard vehicles. The added weight of the vehicles causes tires to wear faster and the tires will need to be rotated much more often. Also, rear brakes on hybrid vehicles tend to need to have pads replaced more often as well. Many hybrid vehicles use front brakes on a vehicle to help create electric power, and this does help to keep front brake pads cooler and last longer. However, this is not the case for the rear brake pads.
